Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives£º.In order to evaluate the warranty of seclusion for treatment, the clinical factors affecting the use of seclusion room have more to be defined. This paper offers a contribution to the research on the use of seclusion by focusing specially on gender.
Methods£º The study looked retrospectively at the use of seclusion room among 236 psychiatric inpatients admitted to a general hospital from March 2002 until February 2003. The characteristics of seclusion were examined by comparing male and female. SPSS10-PC was used for statistical tests.
Results£º 42 patients were secluded in 153 seclusion episodes. The male patients account for 31.2 percent of all seclusion episodes and the females 68.8 percent. Female patients were more often to be secluded than male patients. Male patients were more likely to be secluded for violence but females for psychiatric symptoms.
Conclusion£º The authors conclude that female patients were more often to be secluded than male patients. The reasons of seclusion were different by gender. Further research is required to examine the reasons for the disparities.
